Davos, January 20 (QNA) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has pledged a significant increase in EU investment in Greenland and closer cooperation with the United States to strengthen security in the Arctic.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, von der Leyen said the EU would work with Greenland and Denmark to support the local economy and infrastructure, including the possible development of European icebreaker capabilities as part of higher defense spending.

She also said the EU was ready to work with the US and other partners to enhance Arctic security, calling it a shared strategic interest. However, von der Leyen warned the bloc would respond "firmly" to repeated threats by US President Donald Trump regarding Greenland and proposed tariff increases, stressing that escalating tensions would benefit only common adversaries.

President Trump has argued that US control of Greenland is necessary for national security, a claim strongly rejected by European Nato allies, including Denmark. (QNA)
