Egyptian Authorities Announce Rescue of Freighter Off Suez Canal Entrance Before It Sinks
Cairo, January 14 (QNA) - The Egyptian Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced the success of its rescue efforts in saving a Freighter before it sank, about five miles west of the northern entrance to the Canal in the Mediterranean Sea.
The SCA had received a mayday from sailors reporting that the vessel had developed a 10-degree list to starboard and was taking on water north of Port Said, about five nautical miles west of the northern entrance to the Canal, SCA Chairman Lt. Gen. Osama Rabie reported in a statement Wednesday.
He clarified that two tugs were readied and three small craft were deployed to evacuate all 12 crew members and secure the vessel, which is approximately 122 meters long with a 3.5‑meter draft and a 4,000‑ton displacement.
Rabie assured that all crew members are in good health, with essential healthcare services provided to one crew member who sustained a mild injury.
He noted that the SCA's crisis management committee is following up on the developments of this contingency and maintaining its alertness to take all necessary measures to deal with the vessel. (QNA)
