European Commission President: Russia Must Prove Seriousness about Peace, Following Security Guarantees' Approval
Brussels, January 11 (QNA) - President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen said that it is now up to Russia to demonstrate its willingness for peace, following Ukraine and its allies' approval of a peace plan and security guarantees that are expected to come into force after a ceasefire.
In a press statement Sunday, von der Leyen said that the peace plan is based on a 20-point proposal discussed by Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy with US President, Donald Trump end of last year.
She noted that the plan is accompanied by important, strong, and specific security guarantees from the United States and Europe.
She stressed that Russia is now required to show its genuine interest in peace, adding that the security guarantees will primarily rely on the Ukrainian armed forces, which she described as well-trained and possessing extensive field experience.
The President of the European Commission pointed out that the role of Europeans is to ensure the continued equipping and proper arming of the Ukrainian army.
She added that the second line of defense will be based on the Coalition of the Willing, which includes 35 countries, among them most EU member states, as well as Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Turkiye.
Von der Leyen concluded by saying that it is very good that the Americans are engaged, especially in verification and monitoring, as well as through support. (QNA)
