With Participation of National, International Institutions.. International Conference on AI and Human Rights Kicks-Off Tomorrow
Doha, May 26 (QNA) - The 'Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Opportunities, Risks, and Visions for a Better Future' conference kicks off Tuesday.
The conference is organized by the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the National Cybersecurity Agency, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), Huawei, and other international entities in the field of digital technologies and tools.
HE Chairperson of the NHRC Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah, said in a statement Monday that the conference discusses one of the most prominent human rights issues of our time, one that is becoming increasingly important, especially with the tremendous and growing progress in the field of artificial intelligence, which many human rights activists around the world fear will impact the rights of many individuals worldwide.
She added, that the developments in AI that is observed every day requires the establishment of a legal framework that governs the rights of every individual, whether related to privacy or other rights.
The framework must also regulate and control the technologies developed by companies, ensuring that rights are not infringed upon, and that the development of AI technologies is not synonymous with the pursuit of financial gain, neglecting the potential infringements on the rights of individuals and communities.
Her Excellency emphasized that the conference aims to discuss the impact of AI on human rights, not only limiting itself to the challenges it poses to the lives of individuals, but also extending to identifying the opportunities it presents to human rights specialists around the world.
She noted that the coming period must witness a deep focus on this area, which is evolving by the hour.
The conference, which will bring together approximately 800 participants from around the world, targets government officials and policymakers, AI and technology experts, human rights defenders and activists, legal professionals and AI ethics experts, as well as representatives of civil society organizations, academics and researchers, international organizations, private sector companies, and technology developers.
The first day of the conference will feature an opening session, followed by four main sessions.
The second day will begin with a plenary session for national human rights institutions, followed by four working groups spread across eight sessions, a plenary session to discuss recommendations, and a closing plenary session.
The conference will address 12 main themes and topics, such as the foundations of Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and natural language processing, AI's impact on privacy, algorithmic bias and discrimination, freedom of expression, the role of AI in content moderation, censorship, and preserving free speech.
Conference participants will focus on AI governance and accountability, human rights-based AI policies, transparency, and redress mechanisms.
The conference will also discuss digital access and justice, ensuring equitable access to AI resources, and bridging the digital divide, in addition to discussing the AI for good theme, and how positive applications can be leveraged in the fields of health, justice, the environment, and education.
Participating experts will address legal and ethical frameworks, laws, policies, and ethical standards for the responsible use of AI.
They will also touch on the theme of AI and security, including its implications for militarization, armed conflict, and human rights, as well as discussing AI and democracy, and the role of AI in shaping democratic institutions and promoting inclusive participation.
Moreover, participants will discuss AI and the future of media from a human rights perspective, with a focus on risk and innovation.
The conference will also address the transformations brought about by AI in employment and job opportunities, and how they impact employment, workers' rights, and economic inequality, while examining challenges and prospects.
The AI and Human Rights conference will be accompanied by an exhibition that illustrates the transformative impact of AI on the future of humanity, with a particular focus on its impact on global challenges, society, and industries.
It will also showcase topics such as ethical governance and human rights, AI-driven innovation through real-world applications, and futuristic visionary concepts. (QNA)
