Magnitude 5.3 Earthquake Strikes Cyprus
Nicosia, November 12 (QNA) - An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck west of Cyprus on Wednesday, and was felt by residents of several neighboring countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
Cyprus Geological Survey Department said in a statement that the quake struck at approximately 11:32 local time, 20 kilometers northeast of the city of Paphos in western Cyprus.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 15 kilometers, the statement added, noting that there have been no reports of damage so far, although state television noted that public buildings in Paphos were briefly evacuated.
In a related context, Lebanese and Egyptian authorities said that residents in some areas of both countries felt the earthquake.
Although Cyprus is located in a seismically active region, earthquakes that struck the country rarely cause damage. (QNA)
