Vienna, September 09 (QNA) - The IAEA Board of Governors Wednesday unanimously adopted a resolution to remove the item concerning Syria's "non-compliance" from its agenda, thereby completing all comprehensive technical and legal requirements.
The Board decided to close the case concerning Syria's failure to fulfill its obligations, expressing satisfaction with the cooperation shown by the new Syrian authorities after allowing Agency inspectors access to key nuclear sites.
Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Saudi Arabia submitted the draft resolution, which encourages Syria to continue its cooperation with the Agency, including drilling activities at the Dair Alzour site, and requests the Director General, as appropriate, to inform the Board of the results of the Agency's ongoing activities in Syria.
This strategic feat was the outgrowth of intensive national and diplomatic efforts led by Syria with confidence and competence over the past year and a half, the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission said in a statement.
The statement reaffirmed the nation's ironclad commitment to international standards and full transparency, without relinquishing its sovereign right to develop nuclear technology in support of development.
The Commission added that the fundamental significance of removing the non-compliance lies in achieving multiple strategic gains, as the resolution formally affirms Syria's achievements and its full right to develop and use nuclear science for peaceful purposes on its territory under its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement, serving the fields of radiological medicine, agriculture and scientific research.
The statement continued that the resolution brings to an end a longstanding period of international attempts to take advantage of the nuclear issue as a political pressure tool and definitively closes the door to any efforts to impose restrictions or sanctions under this pretext.
  It affirmed that the resolution represents an explicit international recognition of the seriousness of Syria's approach and highlights the unprecedented cooperation of the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission, which provided full technical and logistical support for international verification and subjected all identified material to the safeguards system.
