Tokyo, September 08 (QNA) - Japanese shares fell sharply on Tuesday, as renewed geopolitical tensions dampened risk sentiment and a sudden surge in the yen weighed negatively on exporters.
The Nikkei index fell 1.7 percent to 65,269.33 points at the close, while the broader Topix index declined 1.83 percent to 4,050.33 points.
On the Topix, shares of glass makers and transportation equipment companies were the biggest decliners, falling 4.44 percent and 4.14 percent, respectively.
JTEKT was the benchmark index's biggest loser, falling 8.68 percent and recording its largest one-day decline since August 2024.
Alps Alpine fell 8.29 percent, while Okuma declined 7.99 percent. (QNA)
