Mexico City, August 07 (QNA) - Mexico and Peru announced on Friday the resumption of diplomatic relations after Lima severed ties with Mexico in November last year, accusing the government of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum of interfering in its internal affairs.
In a joint statement, the foreign ministries of both countries said: "Taking into account the historic bonds of brotherhood, friendship, and cooperation between Mexico and Peru, the two governments have agreed, as of today, to resume diplomatic relations."
Following the announcement, President Sheinbaum told a press conference that former Peruvian Prime Minister Betsy Chavez had departed for Mexico earlier in the day after being granted safe passage. She described the authorization as "a gesture of goodwill" by Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori.
Peru had severed diplomatic relations with Mexico after the Mexican government granted asylum to Chavez, who had taken refuge at the Mexican Embassy in Lima. The Peruvian authorities regarded the decision as interference in the country's internal affairs.
Relations between the two countries had already deteriorated following the ouster of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo in December 2022 after he attempted to dissolve Congress. Castillo was arrested while en route to the Mexican Embassy in Lima to seek asylum.
Peruvian judicial authorities are pursuing legal proceedings against Chavez on suspicion of involvement in the attempted coup carried out by former President Castillo in late 2022. The investigation prompted her to seek refuge at the Mexican Embassy in Lima in November last year. (QNA)
