Russia's Mirra Andreeva Claims First Roland Garros Title
Paris, June 6 (QNA) - Russia's Mirra Andreeva, currently ranked World No. 8, captured her maiden French Open title at Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam tournament of the season, after defeating Poland's Maja Chwalinska in straight sets in Saturday's final.
Andreeva delivered an impressive performance throughout the match, securing a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory to claim her first Grand Slam singles title.
With this triumph, the 19-year-old Russian became the first teenager to win the Roland Garros women's singles crown since Poland's Iga Swiatek achieved the feat in 2020.
Despite falling short in the final, Chwalinska enjoyed a remarkable run in Paris after advancing through the qualifying rounds. She became the first player in French Open history to reach the women's singles final as a qualifier and only the second woman in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam final from qualifying, following Britain's Emma Raducanu, who won the 2021 US Open title after coming through the qualifiers.
Following her outstanding performance at Roland Garros, Chwalinska is expected to rise to at least World No. 21 in the latest WTA rankings. (QNA)
