Microsoft Removes Passwords by Default from New Accounts
Washington, May 03 (QNA) - Microsoft has officially announced that it will request from new users to utilize more secure authentication methods than conventional passwords.
Microsoft added that as part of improving the user experience, it is changing the default behavior for new accounts. The company highlighted that its accounts will now be passwordless by default with
New users will have several passwordless sign-in options and will never be required to create a password, while existing users can go to their account settings to remove their password, Microsoft clarified.
The company stated that nearly one million new passkeys are registered each day, with a sign-in success rate of 98 percent for passkey users, compared to just 32 percent for traditional password-based accounts.
Passkeys are described by Microsoft as a standards-based, phishing-resistant authentication method that replaces passwords, allowing users to sign in through their device's built-in verification methods, such as Face ID on iPhone, fingerprint recognition on Android devices, or Windows Hello on personal computers when accessing services like Gmail, PayPal, or iCloud.
