Moscow, January 29 (QNA) – Russia warned of the potential repercussions of tightening US embargo on Cuba, expressing hope that reports circulating about Washington's intention to take further measures against Havana are untrue.

Spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Maria Zakharova, said in a statement "Moscow hopes that these publications are not rooted in truth", adding that "common sense must prevail in Washington".

Zakharova noted that proceeding down this path would mean placing US national legislation and the sanctions regime above existing international legal norms. She considered the escalation of measures against Cuba an inhumane violation of the Cuban people's right to a decent life, and warned that it could provoke a humanitarian crisis on the island.

The Russian stance comes against the backdrop of reports suggesting that the US administration may impose additional economic restrictions on Cuba, continuing a embargo policy that has been in place for decades. (QNA)
