Israeli Occupation Keeps Al Aqsa Mosque Compound Closed for 5th Consecutive Week
Occupied Jerusalem, April 03 (QNA) - Israeli occupation authorities have kept the Al Aqsa mosque compound closed to worshipers for a fifth consecutive week, citing what it called security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Local officials and witnesses said access to the site, one of Islam's holiest, has been heavily restricted since early March. Israeli police have also intensified their presence across East Jerusalem, particularly in and around the Old City, where checkpoints and patrols have been increased.
Palestinian residents and religious leaders have criticized the closure, describing it as an unprecedented move that has prevented thousands from reaching the Al Aqsa Compound for daily and weekly prayers.
At the same time, Jewish activist groups have called for increased access to the compound during the Passover holiday, a major Jewish festival running from April 1 to 9.
The developments have raised fears of further escalation in Jerusalem, a city that has often been a flashpoint in the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Community leaders in the holy city have called on residents to gather at checkpoints and surrounding areas in an effort to challenge the restrictions and press for the reopening of the mosque. (QNA)
