Kathmandu, August 28 (QNA) - The death toll from flash floods and landslides that swept through border areas between Nepal and China's Tibet region has risen to 547, with 1,437 people injured, as Nepalese authorities intensify efforts to search for the missing and recover victims' bodies.
Nepalese police said 4,473 personnel had taken part in the response to the disaster, which was caused by torrential flooding that struck several areas, particularly along the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa. The army continues to conduct search and rescue operations and recover bodies amid growing concerns over the fate of those still missing.
The army had earlier deployed 1,600 soldiers to assist with rescue operations, distribute emergency aid and manage temporary shelters for those affected. With the deployment of additional reinforcements, the number of military personnel involved in rescue, relief and body-recovery operations has risen to 2,800.
On the international aid front, the European Union announced the allocation of EUR 2 million (USD 2.3 million) in humanitarian assistance for those affected by the floods to address urgent needs for healthcare, food, shelter and water.
European Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib said in a statement that the floods had washed away roads and isolated villages, while families continued to search for missing relatives. She noted that the disaster had struck areas that were still recovering from previous disasters.
The Red Cross, meanwhile, estimated that the landslide disaster in the Himalayan region had directly affected around 93,000 people, who are now in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, as relief officials warned of the risk of further flooding.
The Himalayan region, which stretches across Nepal, India, China and Bhutan, is among the areas most vulnerable to floods and landslides, with temperatures there rising faster than in many other parts of the world, according to reports on the impacts of the climate crisis. (QNA)
