Syria Welcomes Canada's Decision to Lift Sanctions
Damascus, February 19 (QNA) - Syria welcomed Thursday Canada's announcement of the end of sanctions imposed on Damascus, considering this step a positive development that reflects a trend toward strengthening dialogue and cooperation based on mutual respect.
In a statement, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that lifting the sanctions represents a real opportunity to open a new chapter in bilateral relations, in a way that serves the interests of both peoples, contributes to supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts, improves the living conditions of Syrian citizens, and enhances stability in the region.
The ministry reiterated Syria's commitment to a responsible national course of action, and to openness and positive cooperation with the international community to consolidate stability and enhance Syria's position in its Arab, regional and international environment.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced Wednesday that substantial changes had been made to the "Special Economic Measures Regulations for Syria," including lifting the comprehensive economic embargo that had been imposed on Syria since May 2011. (QNA)
