Washington, April 10 (QNA) - Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, announced the launch of its new seventh-generation artificial intelligence (AI) chip named Ironwood in a move aimed at accelerating the performance of AI applications.

The new chip is designed to handle complex calculations required by AI applications such as ChatGPT and other interactive chatbots, known as "inference," which enables models to provide quick answers and generate instant content.

The Ironwood chip combines the advantages of Google's previous chips, which were divided into versions dedicated to training models and others for running them, with improved memory capacity and increased efficiency.

The company says the new chip's power performance is twice as high as the Trillium chip launched in 2024.

Google's tensor processing units (TPUs) can only be used by the company's own engineers or through its cloud service, giving it an edge in developing its own AI models, such as the Gemini model.

Although the company has not disclosed the manufacturer of the new chip, its unveiling at a cloud conference reflects Google's seriousness in entering the AI ??chip race. (QNA)
