Al-Watan newspaper said that the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor documented, in a preliminary file submitted to UN special rapporteurs and the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, dozens of field executions carried out by the Israeli occupation army in the Gaza Strip, calling for immediate investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable and provide justice to the victims. The Monitor urged the aforementioned parties to declare a position on all the widespread killing operations carried out by Israeli forces targeting Palestinian civilians, especially executions in the Gaza Strip, the newspaper added.
It said that the executions carried out by Israeli forces violate international standards and the right to life stipulated in Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They also violate Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights that state that the right to life is an inherent right of every human being, which "the law shall protect", and that "no one shall be arbitrarily deprived of the right to life." Al-Watan called on the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to investigate these documented violations and other war crimes committed by the Israeli occupation against civilians in the Gaza Strip and bring everyone who issued and implemented the orders to justice.
Al-Watan concluded its editorial by stating that international justice moves according to what influential countries see. As a result, Israel is likely to remain immune from accountability, which is a dangerous matter that will lead to a lack of confidence in such international bodies.
In the local context, the Peninsula stated, in its editorial on Wednesday, that tourism has become an important component of Qatar's economy, as nurturing this sector to achieve its full potential is vital in developing the non-energy economy, noting that the State of Qatar has taken strategic steps to attract tourists who will appreciate what the country has to offer whether in cultural or entertainment realms.
In its editorial titled "Evolving Tourism Strategy", the newspaper said that the Shura Council discussed, during its weekly session, the development of the tourism economy and the possible solutions to advance the sector, adding that the members of the Council touched upon all aspects, and called for optimal investment to have a sustainable tourism sector.
It also pointed out that Qatar has already taken many initiatives to preserve its environment and cultural resources, which in turn, will promote responsible tourism, as adopting practices to reduce the environmental impact of tourism and developing and enforcing regulations to protect natural resources and wildlife will encourage responsible behavior among tourists.
Additionally, it is important to promote diverse tourism beyond traditional attractions, through promoting niche tourism sectors such as eco-tourism, cultural tourism, adventure tourism, and most importantly, domestic tourism, as encouraging citizens and residents to spend their vacations in Qatar will help enhance this sector.
The Peninsula concluded its editorial by noting that the country has already embarked, through various stakeholders, on a journey to make Qatar a preferred global destination for tourists. (QNA)
