Doha, September 15 (QNA) - University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) announced its participation in the Sasol Solar Challenge 2024 to promote scientific research and innovation.
UDST selected a team of 13 students and 4 faculty members to design and build a solar-powered car in an integrated educational and practical initiative, in which the university will compete against some of the best universities from Europe, USA, and Asia, amateurs, and professionals worldwide, indicating that the project will represent the university in the international competition held in South Africa this week.
The car was designed to maximize solar photovoltaic efficiency, enabling it to generate enough energy for 7 hours of daily driving on a single charge, while the team was keen to choose lightweight and durable materials to manufacture the car's body, which contributed to increasing its efficiency.
The electrical system was also designed with great precision to ensure that the car performs perfectly in all conditions. The car's chassis was manufactured on campus, reflecting the students' high capabilities in engineering and manufacturing.
In this context, President of UDST Dr. Salem Al-Naemi said, "the dedication and innovation our students have shown are truly commendable." "Their participation in the Sasol Solar Challenge is a prime example of what applied education can achieve. It demonstrates how our hands-on approach empowers students to tackle real-world challenges, aligning with Qatar's Third National Development Strategy, which emphasizes sustainability, innovation, and human development," he added.
For his part, Lourens Jacobs Vice President at Sasol Qatar, the international integrated chemicals and energy company, present in the State of Qatar since 2008, said, "at Sasol, we are immensely proud to welcome the University of Doha for Science and Technology as the first-ever Qatari team to join the Sasol Solar Challenge," adding that "this achievement marks a significant milestone not only for Qatar but also for our shared commitment to Qatar National Vision 2030." "By supporting these talented students in showcasing their skills on a global stage, we are contributing to the development of future leaders who will drive Qatars transition to a knowledge-based and sustainable economy," he continued.
