President of CONMEBOL Calls for Holding 2030 World Cup in South America
Doha, December 11 (QNA) - President of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) Alejandro Dominguez called for holding the 2030 World Cup in South America.
Dominguez said that the candidacy of Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile to host the 2030 World Cup is "very solid," urging FIFA and the "soccer family" to grant South America the opportunity to host the tournament that was "born in Uruguay." Dominguez explained that the decision is a responsibility that falls on FIFA as well as the "football family," pointing out the importance of reminding the world that the first World Cup that was held in 1930 was hosted by Uruguay.
"The other countries will always have the opportunity to host the tournament, but only after the 2030 World Cup, because the 100th anniversary only comes once in a lifetime and that must be in South America." In regard to South America's presence in the semi-finals of World Cup Qatar 2022, which Argentina will play against Croatia, he stressed the significance of Argentina's representation of South America in the semi-finals, noting that it demonstrates that the South American football will compete and aspire to host the next World Cup in its motherland. "We will fight until the end," Dominguez added.
The Argentinian national team, which qualified after defeating the Netherlands, will play the semi-final match on Tuesday at Lusail Stadium, against the Croatian national team, which qualified after defeating Brazil.
