Doha, November 28 (QNA) - The England national football team looks forward to continuing its series of positive results in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 when it meets its Welsh counterpart Tuesday (tomorrow) at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in the third and final round of Group B in the World Cup.
The English team leads the second group with 4 points collected from its victory over its Iranian counterpart with the score of 6-2 in the first round, then tied with its American counterpart in the second round, and seeks to win tomorrow and collect the three points to qualify with 7 points at the top of the group.
The England national team is competing in the Qatar World Cup in Group B, which includes the US, Wales, and Iran.
The England national team is participating in the World Cup for the 16th time and has a good chance to compete for the title and repeat the missing achievement of 56 years.
Historically, the English and Welsh teams met in 103 matches, and the England team was the most victorious with 68 wins, while Wales scored 14 wins, and the result of a tie between them was decided 21 games.
The biggest results that the English team achieved at the expense of Wales were winning 9-1 in 1896 and 5-1 in 1966.
Despite the clear superiority of the English, Wales has a history of unforgettable victories when they defeated England with the score of 4-1 in 1980, days after the latter's victory over the world champion Argentina with 3-1, while the last victory of the Wales team was in 1984 with the goal of Mark Hughes.
In the last five confrontations between the two teams, the England national team dominated in official and friendly matches.
On the other hand, the Wales team seeks to restore its balance in the World Cup and achieve a victory over England at the end of the group stage, after its draw against the US with a score of 1-1 in the first round and their defeat to the Iranian team by a clean double in the second round. The Welsh team has one point to their credit in the last place in the second group and their chances of qualifying for the round of 16 has become difficult.
After an absence of 64 years, the Wales national team returns to participate in the World Cup, where it appeared for the first time in 1958 FIFA World Cup Sweden.
The Welsh national team, led by manager Robert Page, scored its first appearance in the 1958 FIFA World Cup Sweden when it qualified for the quarter-finals before losing with difficulty to Brazil 0-1.
Wales played five previous matches throughout its history in the World Cup, during which it achieved one victory, three draws, and one defeat, and its players scored four goals and conceded four goals as well.
Wales qualified for the World Cup in Qatar, after defeating its rival Ukraine 1-0 in the final of the first track of the European qualifiers, thanks to its captain Gareth Bale, who hit a powerful ball into his own goal by Ukraine defender Andriy Yarmolenko. (QNA)
