Qatar Begin Asian Men's Volleyball Championship Campaign Against Thailand
Tokyo, September 4 (QNA) - The Qatar men's national volleyball team will begin their campaign at the 2026 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship on Saturday when they take on Thailand in their opening Group C match in Fukuoka, Japan.
The tournament is being held from September 4 to 13, with Group C also featuring South Korea and Chinese Taipei.
Qatar completed an intensive preparation program ahead of the continental championship before continuing their campaign in Japan with participation in the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, scheduled for September 19 to October 4.
The national team held a training camp in Slovenia from August 15 to 26 under Argentine coach Camilo Soto. The coaching staff focused on enhancing the players' physical and technical readiness, testing different tactical options and strengthening cohesion within the squad.
During the camp, Qatar played three friendly matches against Egypt, in addition to fixtures against several teams from the Slovenian professional league. The matches provided the coaching staff with an opportunity to assess the players' readiness and performances, particularly with several new faces joining the national team as part of a squad renewal and rebuilding process.
Nine new players took part in the preparation phase alongside more experienced members of the squad, as Qatar seek to build a competitive team capable of meeting the challenges ahead while maintaining squad cohesion and benefiting from the experience of established internationals.
The 14-player Qatar squad comprises Mehdi Samoud, Andrea Cross, Abdulrahman Bakri, Mubarak Musa, Abdullah Naseem, Pape Maguette, Mohammed Abdulwahab, Ibrahim Saeed, Rahimi Wydidi, Renan Ribeiro, Youssef Al Yafei, Mohammed Al Waleed, Mohammed Al Sharshani and Naji Mahmoud.
Qatar will face Chinese Taipei on Sunday before concluding their group-stage campaign against the Republic of Korea on September 8.
The top two teams from each group, along with the best third-placed team, will advance to the quarterfinals.
Qatar will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage and reach the knockout rounds as they look to mount a strong challenge for the continental title. (QNA)
