Jeddah, September 25 (QNA) - Qatar began their Gulf Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over Bahrain on Thursday, earning three points in their opening Group B match at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City Stadium.

Boualem Khoukhi put Qatar ahead in the 61st minute before captain Hassan Al Haydos sealed the win with a stoppage-time penalty in the ninth minute of added time.

Qatar controlled much of the match and created several chances, while Bahrain struggled to find an equalizer after falling behind.

Qatar were reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute after Ahmed Fathi received a second yellow card. Bahrain increased the pressure but could not break through.

Al Haydos then converted from the spot after being fouled by Bahrain defender Abbas Al Asfour, who was sent off, completing Qatar's 2-0 win.

The result puts Qatar level on three points with the UAE, who beat Yemen 4-0 earlier in the day. Bahrain and Yemen remain without points. (QNA)
