Washington, September 29 (QNA) - A US ban on imports of certain Canadian products took effect Tuesday, further escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa.

The measures target certain Canadian dairy products, alcoholic beverages and motorcycles, including motorcycles equipped with internal-combustion engines with a cylinder capacity of more than 800 cc.

The White House announced the measures on September 8, shortly after Canada imposed new retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of US goods, including steel, dairy products and agricultural equipment. The Canadian measures followed US duties of 50% on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, imposed after several rounds of trade negotiations broke down.

The latest restrictions deepen the US-Canada trade dispute, with Washington moving beyond tariffs to block selected Canadian products from entering the US market. Canada has described the broader US measures as relatively modest, while maintaining retaliatory tariffs on US goods. (QNA)
