London, September 27 (QNA) - British police have arrested several people on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, southwest England, a British air base used by US forces.

Several properties in the nearby village of Whelford were evacuated after a major incident was declared following the arrests, while the Army's specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal team examined a number of vehicles and police established a security cordon.

Gloucestershire Police said the situation was under control and reassured residents that there was no cause for alarm.

Armed police officers were seen blocking access to the base's main gate, while emergency crews, including police, ambulances and fire engines, were deployed in and around nearby Fairford.

RAF Fairford is used by US forces and has drawn increased attention in recent months because of its role in US military operations linked to the war in the Middle East.

The British government had authorized the United States to use the base for strikes against Iranian missile sites used to target ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The US Air Force declined to comment on specific force-protection measures but said its units stationed in the UK remain vigilant and are taking appropriate steps to protect service members, civilians, contractors and their families.

  The Air Force added that it continuously assesses a range of factors to determine which security measures should be implemented or adjusted to protect its facilities, personnel and families. (QNA)
