New York, September 22 (QNA) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva affirmed that the continued construction of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank makes the two-state solution an increasingly less viable option.

In his address during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York Tuesday, da Silva stated that generations of Palestinians would bear the pain and trauma of the genocide inflicted upon women and children in the Gaza Strip by Israeli occupation forces.

He also warned that targeting the International Criminal Court and attempting to undermine its members' efforts fosters impunity for perpetrators of crimes, reiterating his call to address the paralysis affecting the Security Council’s decision-making mechanisms in order to safeguard the international legal and humanitarian system.

The Brazilian President leveled sharp criticism at the performance of the United Nations, arguing that it had failed to fulfill one of its most critical responsibilities - protecting humanity and addressing crises and conflicts that threaten international security and stability - and stating that the international community is now facing unprecedented challenges due to the declining credibility of multilateral action.

Da Silva urged the UN Security Council to shoulder its historic responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security and sparing humanity the scourge of war, noting that the world is facing an unprecedented number of armed conflicts since World War II.

He indicated that there is a structural flaw in the UN Charter that grants certain powers options to bypass agreed-upon collective frameworks. (QNA)
