Doha, August 07 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has welcomed the release of 15 detainees by the Congolese authorities and the facilitation by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) of their transfer and handover to the Congo River Alliance/March 23 Movement (AFC/M23) on Aug. 6 and 7, under the mechanism for the release of detained persons signed in Doha in September last year as part of the Doha Peace Process.
Qatar affirmed that the release of the detainees represents an important step toward strengthening confidence between the parties and creating favorable conditions for achieving further progress toward peaceful and sustainable solutions, thereby supporting efforts to restore peace and stability in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The State of Qatar also commended the role of the ICRC in implementing the mechanism for the release, safe transfer, and handover of detainees in accordance with humanitarian principles, as well as the efforts of partners supporting the peace process.
Qatar reiterated its commitment to continuing its efforts to facilitate dialogue between the parties, in line with its steadfast approach to supporting the peaceful settlement of conflicts and promoting regional security and stability. It also expressed hope that this step would encourage further confidence-building measures between the parties and help fulfill the aspirations of the Congolese people for peace, development, and prosperity.
