LoginMECC Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Marine Biodiversity, Whale Sharks
Doha, August 30 (QNA) - The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) reaffirmed its unremitting commitment to protecting marine biodiversity and whale sharks in Qatari waters, considering the species one of the foremost components of marine biodiversity.
In a statement marking International Whale Shark Day, which falls annually on Aug. 30, the ministry highlighted the key research and studies that the Wildlife Development Department has been leading since 2010, focusing on examining whale shark population structure and identifying individual whale sharks through the efforts of a sophisticated team comprising scientists and researchers specializing in marine biology and whale shark research.
MECC underlined that enhanced scientific knowledge of whale sharks in Qatari waters was an outgrowth of years-long research efforts, noting that aerial survey operations have resulted in tracking approximately 700 sharks in a single day.
The ministry deemed this a scientific feat that demonstrates the paramount importance of Qatari waters as one of the world's foremost congregation points for whale sharks.
The ministry added that these efforts culminated in the publication of Qatar's first whale shark catalog, providing an important scientific database to support the tracking of the species and inform future research.
It noted that professional studies and research provide accurate scientific data on whale shark numbers, population characteristics, and movement patterns, thereby strengthening MECC's capability to develop and implement powerful programs to conserve the species and its natural habitats while sustaining marine biodiversity in Qatar.
As such, MECC called on all community members at home to help shield this unique species by persistently keeping the marine environment clean, preventing sources of pollution, and refraining from disturbing marine species while they are in their natural habitats.
It also urged community members to contribute to strengthening awareness of the importance of preserving biodiversity and marine treasures for generations to come.
In addition, the ministry assured that monitoring and scientific research efforts would continue, culminating in further promoting the State of Qatar's stature as one of the world's most important territories hosting whale shark congregations.
It pointed out that these efforts would help protect the species and its habitats, as well as foster the sustainability of the marine ecosystem for generations to come. (QNA)
