Iraq Opens Investigation into Targeting of Office of Kurdistan Regional Government PM
Baghdad, August 17 (QNA) - Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al Zaidi ordered today the formation of an investigative committee to determine the source of the attack targeting the private office of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the region's intelligence director in Erbil.
The Prime Minister's Media Office said in a statement that the committee would investigate the circumstances of the attack, determine its sources and points of origin, and identify those responsible. It added that the Prime Minister had ordered the findings of the investigation to be made public as quickly as possible.
The statement added that the committee would examine the details of the attack in preparation for taking the necessary measures against those responsible.
In the same context, the Iraqi Parliament Presidency condemned the attack, describing it as a dangerous and unacceptable development that affects Iraq's sovereignty, the security of its citizens and the stability of its institutions. It stressed that the security of the Kurdistan Region was an integral part of Iraq's security and that targeting any part of the country's territory or its officials and institutions cannot be accepted under any circumstances or pretext.
For his part, US President's Special Envoy to Iraq Tom Barrack condemned the attack and affirmed full support for the Iraqi leadership in restoring Iraq's full sovereignty and ensuring that all weapons and security forces remain under the authority of the Iraqi state.
The Kurdistan Region's Counter-Terrorism Service had earlier announced that the office of Kurdistan's Regional Government Prime Minister Barzani in Erbil was targeted this morning by two explosive-laden Hadid-110 drones, which it said had been launched from the Iranian side.
In a statement, the service said the two drones targeted the private office of the Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister and the residence of the director of the region's security services in Pirmam in Erbil, northern Iraq. (QNA)
