Cairo, August 15 (QNA) - The Arab Parliament has underscored that any bids or intentions on the part of Slovenia to withdraw the recognition of the State of Palestine or transfer its embassy to occupied Jerusalem are utterly unacceptable.

The bloc warned of the grave consequences of such moves on the future of peace and stability in the region.

In formal letters addressed to Slovenia's National Assembly and National Council and the European Parliament, Speaker of the Arab Parliament Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi stressed that recognizing the State of Palestine isn't a temporary political action that can be reversed, but rather a legal and moral obligation that embodies the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, as well as an immutable and inalienable right that receives the recognition of vast numbers of countries around the world.

Transferring any embassy to occupied Jerusalem constitutes a clear violation of UN Security Council Resolution 478 (1980) and runs contrary to the relevant international resolutions, as well as the European position, Al Yamahi underlined.

He recalled that the European position confirms that the status of Jerusalem is one of the final-status issues that should only be resolved through negotiations and based on resolutions of international legitimacy.

In the letter addressed to the European Parliament, Al Yamahi called for leveraging all parliamentary and political tools to maintain the European supportive position on Palestinian rights and preclude any attempts that would legitimize the occupation's policies that are based on annexation, settlement and imposition of the fait accompli.

Al Yamahi pointed out that the advisory opinion rendered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on July 19, 2024, tacitly confirmed that all nations are committed to never recognizing the unlawful status arising from the Israeli occupation of the occupied Palestinian territory and never providing any kind of support that helps perpetuate this status.

In addition, Al Yamahi confirmed that any reversal of the recognition of the State of Palestine or any bid to alter the legal character of occupied Jerusalem would inexorably vitiate the international system that is based on respecting international law.

This move, he stressed, would encourage the Israeli occupation to break loose in its expansionist policies, thereby imperiling both regional and international security and stability.

The Arab bloc's move comes amid a political controversy stirred by Prime Minister of Slovenia Janez Jansa over his government's bid to freeze the recognition of the State of Palestine and transfer the embassy to occupied Jerusalem.

This comes in the wake of President Natasa Pirc Musar's confirmation that she is supportive of the recognition of the State of Palestine, the two-state solution and respect for international law.

Slovenia's parliament approved recognition of the State of Palestine in June 2024, making Slovenia one of the European countries to take the step in support of the two-state solution and peace in the Middle East. (QNA)
