The Hague, July 09 (QNA) - The Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), at its 112th session held in The Hague, adopted a draft decision submitted by the State of Qatar regarding the reinstatement of the rights and privileges of the Syrian Arab Republic at the OPCW. Sixty-six States Parties co-sponsored the draft decision.
The adoption of the decision is the culmination of diplomatic efforts undertaken by the State of Qatar through a series of consultations and initiatives that contributed to building broad consensus among States Parties, paving the way for its adoption.
The decision marks a pivotal moment in the work of the Organization, as it reinstates the Syrian Arab Republic's rights and privileges at the OPCW, which had been suspended by a decision of the Conference of the States Parties issued in April 2021 due to the practices of the former regime. This allows Syria to resume exercising its full rights and privileges as a State Party to the OPCW.
The decision embodies the progress achieved by the Syrian Arab Republic in its cooperation with the OPCW and reflects the confidence placed in the efforts aimed at completing the elimination of the remnants of the former regime's chemical weapons program. This strengthens the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and serves the objectives of the Organization.
The adoption of the decision also confirms the constructive role played by the State of Qatar in facilitating dialogue and bringing together the views of the States Parties in support of consensus and in strengthening multilateral action. (QNA)
