2026 FIFA World Cup: Norway Knock Out Brazil to Reach Quarterfinals
New York, July 06 (QNA) - Norway reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 for the first time in their history after Erling Haaland scored twice late on to secure a 2-1 victory over Brazil in their Round of 16 clash at New York New Jersey Stadium on Saturday.
Haaland struck in the 80th and 89th minutes to send Norway into the last eight, before Neymar Jr. converted a stoppage-time penalty (90+9) to reduce the deficit.
Norway defended resolutely throughout, with goalkeeper Orjan Nyland saving Bruno Guimaraes' early penalty before Haaland broke the deadlock 10 minutes from time with a header from Andreas Schjelderup's cross. Schjelderup then set up Haaland again nine minutes later for a powerful finish that all but sealed the victory.
Haaland's brace also took him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe at the top of the tournament's scoring charts, with all three players on seven goals.
Norway will face England in the quarterfinals after the Three Lions defeated Mexico 3-2 later on Saturday. (QNA)
