Paris - Madrid, July 25 (QNA) - Authorities in France and Spain have evacuated nearly 270,000 people as uncontrolled wildfires continue to spread through forests in both countries.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on Saturday that 167,000 people had been evacuated due to fires near the city of Bordeaux and the Gironde department in which it is in, as well as 30,000 others were evacuated from the nearby department of Landes, both in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France.

Nunez added that wildfires have burned approximately 98,000 hectares across France since the beginning of 2026, describing the figure as unprecedented.

Several fires across the country remain out of control, the French Interior Minister noted.

Meanwhile, Spain's Ministry of the Interior announced that the number of people evacuated because of the wildfires had risen to 70,000, an increase of 25,000 from the figure announced earlier.

Local reports indicated that the wildfires in Spain are concentrated near Madrid.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that the top priority in responding to the wildfires near Madrid is saving lives and protecting populated areas, warning that bringing the fires under control will be a complex task. (QNA)
