WHO Warns of Worsening Cholera Outbreak in Sudan
Geneva, July 10 (QNA) - The World Health Organization warned today of a worsening cholera outbreak in Sudan amid the continuing conflict, widespread displacement, and the onset of the rainy season.
The organization said that at least 114 people have died and more than 1,300 others have been infected with the disease.
The WHO said the cholera outbreak, which was declared on June 27, has spread across several Sudanese states, particularly in the Darfur and Kordofan regions, where humanitarian and health workers are facing significant challenges in reaching affected communities.
Speaking during a virtual press briefing from Libya, WHO Representative in Sudan Shible Sahbani said the case fatality rate had reached 13.7 percent, describing it as extremely high and warning that the rainy season could further worsen the situation.
He added that Sudan was currently facing the world's largest humanitarian crisis, with more than 33 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and 21 million requiring health services.
Sahbani also expressed concern about conditions in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, noting that healthcare facilities there are under severe pressure while the delivery of humanitarian aid continues to be hindered by ongoing fighting.
He warned that the city could face circumstances similar to those experienced by El Fasher, which endured a prolonged siege during the country's ongoing conflict. (QNA)
