US Supreme Court Rejects Executive Order Ending Birthright Citizenship
Washington, June 30 (QNA) - The US Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected an executive order by President Donald Trump seeking to end birthright citizenship in the United States.
The ruling, issued on the final day of the Court's term, was approved by six justices and opposed by three.
Trump had signed the order on the first day of his second term to deny automatic US citizenship to children born to parents living in the country illegally or on temporary visas. Lower courts had blocked the order, ruling that it violated the Constitution.
Chief Justice John Roberts said that children born in the United States to parents who are in the country unlawfully or temporarily are citizens from birth.
It marked the second time this year that the Supreme Court has struck down a Trump administration measure, following its February ruling overturning broad global tariffs.
Opponents argued the order violated the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, which grants citizenship to anyone born in the United States. (QNA)
