Qatar Participates in 15th Open-ended Working Group Meeting on Basel Convention
Geneva, July 01 (QNA) - The State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, participated in the work of the 15th meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, which was held in Geneva, Switzerland, with the participation of representatives of the States Parties, international organizations and experts.
The meeting reviewed a number of priority technical and strategic issues, including the management of plastic and textile waste. It also reviewed proposed amendments to the annexes to the Convention, strengthening cooperation with relevant international organizations, as well as following up on the implementation of the decisions of the Conference of the Parties, and preparing for upcoming meetings and entitlements.
Prior to the meeting, a delegation from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, represented by the Hazardous Chemicals and Waste Department, participated in the work of the Implementation and Compliance Committee of the Basel Convention, of which the State of Qatar is a member. The delegation contributed to the discussion of a number of topics related to strengthening the implementation of the provisions of the Convention, supporting the compliance of States Parties with their obligations, as well as exploring mechanisms for developing international cooperation and building capacities in the field of sound environmental management of hazardous waste.
The Ministry affirmed that the State of Qatar’s participation in the Basel Convention reflects its firm commitment to supporting international efforts to protect the environment and preserve public health and to promote the sustainable management of chemicals and hazardous waste, in accordance with best practices and global environmental standards, in order to contribute to achieving sustainable development goals and preserving resources for future generations.
