German Chancellor Confident Major Reforms Within Reach Despite Government Rifts
Berlin, June 06 (QNA) - The governing coalition in Berlin possesses the essential strength and cohesion to execute the required overhauls and modernize the country, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said.
Merz was speaking before the Congress of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and affirmed that he is confident in his government's capability to undertake successful reforms of the social insurance system.
It is significant to maintain the ability to reach settlements and consensus, he noted, citing the disparities between the Christian Union and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) within the governing coalition.
The German Chancellor shared that a meeting will be convened on Wednesday at the headquarters of the German Chancellery, bringing together members of the governing coalition and representatives of the social partners, namely the trade unions on the one hand and the employers' and industry associations on the other.
He stressed that no decisions would emerge from the meeting; rather, it would serve as a forum for consultation and the exchange of views on possible courses of action.
Merz added that he expected the trade unions, industry associations, and economic stakeholders to reach a common understanding among themselves, having asked four representatives from the unions and four representatives from the business community to submit, by Wednesday, joint proposals outlining what they expect from policymakers to strengthen Germany's competitiveness.
The Chancellor rebuffed misgivings about his government's capability to modernize Germany, stressing that he is confident in the nation's ability to overcome the current difficulties. (QNA)
