WHO launches $518m Ebola Response Plan for DR Congo Outbreak
Nairobi, June 05 (QNA) - The World Health Organization (WHO) has unveiled a six-month, $518 million response plan to combat the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, expressing confidence that the disease can be contained.
Speaking in Nairobi, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the plan, developed jointly with the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, builds on lessons learned from previous Ebola outbreaks and health emergencies.
He said successful containment would require political commitment, sustained funding and strong community engagement.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported 359 confirmed Ebola cases, including 61 deaths, across 24 health zones in three provinces. Authorities have also reported a decline in suspected cases to 116 from more than 1,000 a week earlier.
The country declared its 17th Ebola outbreak on May 15, prompting the WHO to issue an international health alert. (QNA)
