Qatari Champion Mutaz Barshim Tells QNA He Aims for Strong Showing at Monaco Diamond League
Doha, June 21 (QNA) - Qatari Olympic and world champion Mutaz Barshim said that finishing second in the men's high jump at the Doha Diamond League is a first step in his technical progression and his return to full physical and competitive form ahead of the 2026 athletics season.
In his remarks to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Barshim added that he looks forward to achieving the best results in the current season, stating that the gradual achievement of ambitions is quite imperative for all athletes.
He further noted that his current objective is to restore the technical, physical, and mental levels, especially that he has been on hiatus for two years away from competition.
Barshim recalled that for two years he hasn't participated in contests and that this is a natural corollary of his jumping stamina being affected, but he is confident that a return to the known level would be certain with patience, training, and constant work.
In addition, Barshim said he will compete at the Monaco Diamond League (Meeting Herculis EBS), the tenth stop of the season in July 2026, and that he aspires to achieve the best possible results. He added that reaching a high technical level takes time, that he isn't in a hurry, and that he continues to work consistently toward his goals.
Barshim attributed the highly competitive level of Italian athletes to the strong high-jump school in Italy, which he said makes them more consistent in competition. He also referred to his rival Matteo Sioli, who won first place in the Doha Diamond League meeting with a height of 2.29m, while he finished second with a clearance of 2.27m.
He expressed his profound gratitude for his high jump rivals, saying that he always enjoys competition and that it strengthens his competitive spirit and drives him to deliver his best performance in the event.
In essence, Barshim began his current season in May by winning the high jump gold medal at the Gulf Games - Doha 2026, before going on to claim the gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in China.
Having held the second-best high jump mark in history (2.43m set in Brussels in 2014), Barshim progressed this season with clearances of 2.20m at the Gulf Games, 2.24m at the Asian Championships, and 2.27m at the Doha Diamond League meeting. (QNA)
