UK, EU to Hold ‘Reset’ Summit in July
London, June 17 (QNA) - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed that his government will deliver on its pledge to "reset" relations with the European Union and strengthen the United Kingdom’s position in Europe, stressing the importance of joint cooperation to address the cost-of-living crisis, support job creation and expand opportunities for young people.
This came after the European Union and the United Kingdom announced that their upcoming summit would be held in Brussels on July 22 to discuss the "reset" of relations between the two sides, following several postponements due to disputes related to the youth mobility program.
European Council President Antonio Costa confirmed the summit date, noting that close cooperation between the EU and the UK is essential to strengthening common European security, resilience, and economic prosperity.
The summit is expected to address a number of key issues, including an agreement to facilitate trade in food and agricultural products by reducing procedures and checks on British exports to the EU, as well as progress in negotiations on aligning the emissions trading systems of both sides.
Negotiations over the youth mobility program remain one of the main points of contention, with the EU insisting on reaching an agreement on the issue as a key condition for advancing the process of resetting relations between the two sides. (QNA)
