Doha, May 09 (QNA) - The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has launched a new vessel for marine monitoring and scientific research, reinforcing efforts to enhance Qatar's environmental surveillance system, expand field capabilities, and support marine protection and research programs.
In a statement issued Saturday, the Ministry said the vessel's launch forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen environmental data quality and provide accurate information to support decision-making, in line with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030.
Director of the Marine Protection Department Mohammed Al Khanji said the vessel was equipped with advanced technical capabilities that enable it to efficiently conduct marine monitoring and research missions, access remote and shallow marine areas, and enhance rapid response to environmental emergencies at sea.
Al Khanji said the vessel will support a wide range of operations, including marine sample collection, preliminary analysis, and the monitoring of environmental phenomena such as red tides and fish die-offs. He added that it will also enhance marine environment assessment programs carried out by the Marine Protection Department in coordination with the Environmental Monitoring and Inspection Department and other relevant departments, including Wildlife Development, Nature Reserves, and Environmental Monitoring.
For his part, Director of the Environmental Monitoring and Inspection Department Hassan Al Qasimi said the vessel combines operational efficiency with lower operating costs compared to larger boats. The 45-foot vessel, which can accommodate up to 12 people, is powered by four engines that allow it to cover long distances rapidly, enhancing marine coverage during both routine and emergency monitoring missions.
He added that the vessel features advanced navigation and communication systems, including GPS, radar, and the Starlink satellite network, enabling continuous communication with field teams in remote marine areas and supporting more efficient environmental monitoring and research operations.
He noted that the vessel includes an onboard environmental laboratory for preliminary analyses and field sample processing, along with a crane for handling research equipment and instruments. The vessel is also fitted with water-quality monitoring systems, marine sediment sampling tools, plankton nets, and dedicated storage spaces for diving cylinders, supporting scientific and field missions with high levels of safety and efficiency.
