ICESCO, Saudi Ministry of Culture Review Progress of Arabic Calligraphy Dictionary Project
Rabat, May 07 (QNA) - Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the Saudi Ministry of Culture discussed on Wednesday the progress of their joint project The Illustrated Dictionary of the History of Arabic Calligraphy.
The discussions focused on the current stage of the project, particularly the development of a scholarly framework documenting the most prominent sources of Arabic calligraphy in the Islamic world, including manuscripts, inscriptions, artworks, and other materials, with the aim of presenting this cultural heritage in a rigorous academic format highlighting its evolution and distinctive characteristics.
The two sides also discussed a proposal to organize an academic workshop at ICESCO headquarters in Rabat, bringing together researchers, experts, and specialists in Arabic calligraphy.
Director-General of ICESCO, Dr. Salim bin Mohammed Al Malik stressed that the project aims to consolidate the authenticity of Arabic calligraphy and highlight its uniqueness and independence within its cultural context, noting that it represents one of the most important reference projects in the Islamic world.
He added that it will contribute to preserving and documenting the art form through a three-volume illustrated scholarly dictionary.
He further said that ICESCO continues to work on the project in close coordination with its partners, explaining that current efforts include preparing a project guide and drafting the titles of the three volumes. (QNA)
