Trump Announces Plan to Help Ships Leave Strait of Hormuz Starting Monday
Washington, May 3 (QNA) - US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the United States will begin an initiative dubbed "Project Freedom" to help ships leave the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday.
In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump described the plan as a "humanitarian gesture" to assist vessels stranded in the vital shipping lane, which has been disrupted by weeks of conflict and blockades.
He said countries not involved in the Middle East conflict had requested US assistance to free their vessels stuck in the strait.
The plan aims to guide ships -- particularly those from neutral countries -- safely out of the waterway so they can resume commercial operations, he added.
Trump said many of the stranded vessels were facing shortages of food and essential supplies needed to sustain crews in safe and sanitary conditions.
He said the United States would make every effort to ensure the safe passage of the ships and their crews, adding that representatives of those countries had indicated they would not return until the area is safe for navigation. (QNA)
