WHO Warns War in DRC Is Complicating Ebola Containment Efforts
Geneva, May 27 (QNA) - The World Health Organization (WHO) warned Wednesday that the ongoing war in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is significantly complicating efforts to contain the deadly Ebola outbreak, calling for an immediate ceasefire in the country.
Director-General of WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the east of the country is facing a "catastrophic collision of disease and conflict", with the Ebola outbreak in Ituri province outpacing the response.
He pointed out that the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola spreading in DRC has no approved vaccine or treatment, stressing that stopping transmission depends entirely on humanitarian access.
In essence, WHO has so far recorded 10 confirmed Ebola deaths in DRC and 220 suspected deaths, in addition to 900 suspected cases, since Kinshasa announced the outbreak on May 15, 2026. (QNA)
