German Economy Minister Urges Trust-Based, Open Dialogue with China
Beijing, May 27 (QNA) - German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche called on Wednesday, at the start of her visit to China, for "open dialogue based on trust and openness" between Berlin and Beijing.
During her meeting with the Vice Minister of China’s National Development and Reform Commission, Zhou Haibing, Reiche said this dialogue is "of great importance" to her.
She referred to the "very good bilateral talks" recently held by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz with Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding that her task now is to "continue this path."
The German minister addressed issues of energy and supply security, emphasizing that these matters receive paramount importance for China as well.
The aggravating situation in the Middle East raises concern that it poses a threat to the security of supplies in Europe and Germany, Reiche recalled, noting that AI use helps increase demand for electricity and highly efficient grids.
The visit marks the efforts of both countries to deepen dialogue in the political and economic fields, as the German Chancellor had relaunched talks with Beijing during his visit to the Far East at the end of last February.
China is the most significant commercial partner for Germany, despite Chinese imports largely exceeding German exports to China.
According to data from the German Federal Statistical Office, the total trade volume between the two countries exceeded EUR 250 billion last year.
Germany imported goods from China worth EUR 170.6 billion, an increase of 8.8% compared with the previous year.
German exports to China fell by 9.7%, reaching EUR 81.3 billion. (QNA)
