UN Climate Body Urges Faster Shift to Clean Energy
Paris, May 27 (QNA) - The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change called for accelerating the transition to clean energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels amid intensifying heatwaves affecting parts of Europe and Asia.
In a statement, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change Simon Stiell said the recent heatwave in Europe is a stark reminder of the growing human and economic impact of the climate crisis.
He warned that continued dependence on coal, oil and gas, along with deforestation, is fueling extreme weather events, noting that countries including India are also experiencing severe heatwaves worsened by human-driven climate change.
Several European countries, including United Kingdom and France, have recorded unusually high temperatures, while India saw temperatures rise to 47.4 degrees Celsius on Monday. (QNA)
