Strong Demand for Sacrificial Animals after Launch of National Initiative Promoting Local Production
Doha, May 21 (QNA) - Markets saw today a strong demand for buying sacrificial animals after the launch of the national initiative by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in coordination with the Ministry of Municipality, to encourage local production and subsidize sacrificial animals, with purchases and reservations beginning after the price of local and imported sheep was set at QR1,000.
Widam Food Company, a Qatari public shareholding firm, is one of the leading companies operating in the meat sector and is implementing this initiative by providing local and imported sacrificial animals, in addition to operating a network of slaughterhouses, including Al Wakra central abattoir.
Talking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Director of Public Relations at Widam Food Company Musa Ahmed Al Othman confirmed the significant increase in demand for sacrificial animals today, coinciding with the launch of the initiative, and noted that the company will begin sales operations from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for a period of 10 days.
Noting that the initiative has allocated 12,500 head of livestock, comprising both local and imported breeds, and that it is being implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of Municipality, and the Qatar Livestock Society (Anaam), Al Othman said that coordination has been established with livestock breeders and farm owners to deliver local production to Widam Company after inspection, sorting, and verification of compliance with the Sharia requirements for sacrificial animals.
He commended the support provided by the Ministry of Municipality to the initiative through facilitating import procedures and coordinating with all relevant parties to streamline import operations, despite the challenges facing supply chains and the veterinary permits and certificates required for livestock importation.
He affirmed that Widam Company has secured sufficient stock to meet the increasing annual demand for subsidized goods, especially since Eid Al-Adha is one of the most significant consumption seasons after Ramadan, while explaining that the company has approximately 10,000 head of livestock and that the entire quantity will be covered within the next two days to meet the needs of Qatari consumers.
Subsidized sacrificial animals are sold for QR1,000, while prices in the unsubsidized market range between QR2,300 and QR2,700 per animal.
Al Othman noted that the subsidized sacrificial animals provided by Widam Company are witnessing high demand from citizens, especially since they meet the required weight and specifications, adding that there are six direct sales points: the central abattoir in Al Wakra, Al Shahaniya, Abu Nakhla, Al Shamal, Al Khor, and Umm Salal.
Confirming that the company is working to increase the quantities in stages and has developed a program for transporting and storing the animals, he also pointed out that Widam offers an online pre-booking service for the limited quantities of subsidized sacrificial animals, which will be slaughtered and delivered during the Eid holidays.
Regarding the imported sacrificial animals, he explained that sheep were imported from Sudan and will be available for booking through the Widam app for delivery to consumers on the first and second days of Eid Al-Adha.
He noted that the company will operate the Al Wakra, Al Shahaniya, and Umm Salal slaughterhouses during the Eid holidays, adding that the Al Wakra central slaughterhouse is working, in coordination with the relevant authorities, to ensure a stock of sacrificial animals that will be delivered on the second, third, and fourth days of Eid.
Regarding the plans of charitable organizations, Al Othman stated to QNA that the company supports the plans of charitable organizations to implement their annual sacrificial animal projects, which will begin on the third and fourth days of Eid Al-Adha. He pointed out that the Al Wakra central abattoir has a capacity of over 4,000 head of various types of livestock, which supports production at other slaughterhouses. (QNA)
