Palestinian Foreign Ministry Slams Israel's Bid to Takeover UNRWA Premises in Occupied Jerusalem
Ramallah, May 18 (QNA) - The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli occupation authorities' ratification of a decision to construct military and security facilities on the bombed-out premises of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied Jerusalem, under the designation of a museum.
In a statement, the Ministry considered this move as a "perilous precedent" whose fallout does not compromise the status quo in the occupied city but goes beyond to directly impact the legal precepts that regulate UN operations and its institutions.
Deeming this action as going contrary to the immunity of these institutions located under the occupation's control, the statement appealed to the UN and the member states to clearly spring into action and take the Israeli occupation authorities to task.
The statement stressed that UNRWA was plainly established under a mandate issued by the UNGA, a testament to the relentless international responsibility toward the issue of Palestinian refugees in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
As such, any attempt to compromise the agency's existence or alter the legal status quo of its facilities amounts to infringement upon inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, by the will of the international community per se, the Ministry recalled.
It reemphasized that these rights, foremost of which are the right to return, reparation, and self-determination, are immutable and deeply rooted under international law and UN resolutions, which are obviously inalienable and must not be abrogated by Israel's measures or the policy of fait accompli.
