New York, April 08 (QNA) - HE President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly Annalena Baerbock met with HE Chairman of the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly Nassir bin Abdulaziz Al-Nasser.

The meeting reviewed the current international situation and challenges, with particular focus on developments in the Gulf region and the Middle East, and the dangerous escalation against the backdrop of the US-Israeli war with Iran, and the resulting negative repercussions for international peace and security.

They also discussed the letter sent from the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly to the President of the General Assembly, which expressed grave concern about the accelerating escalation and its threat to international peace and security as well as the violations of the UN Charter and international law, the direct threat to civilians and vital infrastructure, including energy facilities and crucial maritime routes.

Sent on March 25, 2026, the letter contained an explicit call for the United Nations to assume its role by taking urgent steps, including the General Assembly acting within its mandate to convene an emergency session, launch a high-level diplomatic initiative in accordance with the UN Charter, and work towards a comprehensive international conference on peace and security in the Gulf and the Middle East under the auspices of the United Nations.
