14 People Killed in South Sudan's Plane Crash
Juba, April 27 (QNA) - The South Sudanese Civil Aviation Authority announced Monday that 14 people were killed when a small plane crashed near the capital, Juba.
In a statement, the authority explained that the Cessna 208 Caravan crashed southwest of Juba, killing all 13 passengers and the pilot on board.
It added that the plane was on a domestic flight from Yei to Juba International Airport and took off at 9:15 a.m. local time. Contact was lost with the aircraft about half an hour after takeoff.
Authorities said that two of the victims were Kenyan citizens, while the remaining passengers were South Sudanese nationals.
Initial reports suggest that poor weather conditions and low visibility contributed to the crash. Investigations are still underway to determine the final cause of the accident.
The Civil Aviation Authority also reported that it had dispatched a team to the crash site, located about 20 kilometers from Juba, to gather information and provide support to emergency response teams.
Videos circulating on social media showed the wreckage of the plane ablaze in a fog-shrouded, elevated area.
Plane crashes are frequent in the country and are often attributed to overloading or poor weather conditions.
In January 2025, 20 people were killed in a plane crash in northern South Sudan.
Five people died when a World Food Programme fuel tanker crashed in 2021. And in 2015, a plane crash in Juba killed 36 people. (QNA)
