Washington, April 23 (QNA) - US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that American forces had taken "complete control" of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any vessels laying mines would be destroyed.

"I have ordered the United States Navy to shoot and kill any boat, small boats though they may be...that is putting mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz,"

Trump posted on Truth Social, adding that minesweepers were already working to clear the area.

He also stated the strait would not be reopened unless Iran agreed to a deal to end the conflict, while Tehran has so far rejected reopening it under continued US pressure on its ports and accused Washington of violating a ceasefire.

The developments have raised fears of renewed escalation between the US and Iran. Oil prices in Asia briefly rose by around 4% before easing, underscoring concerns over global economic disruption.

Meanwhile, Islamabad is seeking to convene a second round of talks after earlier negotiations failed to produce a breakthrough. (QNA)
