London, April 17 (QNA) - Britain has reiterated that freedom of navigation is a cornerstone of the global economy, calling for the full protection of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking at a United Nations General Assembly session on the use of the veto, UK charge d'affaires James Kariuki said attacks on commercial shipping in the Gulf have caused severe global disruption.

He said the incidents have hindered exports of critical goods, including fertilizers, liquefied natural gas and jet fuel, with wide-ranging economic and humanitarian consequences worldwide.

Kariuki stressed that Iran must not unlawfully obstruct passage through the Strait of Hormuz, urging full respect for international maritime law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

He added that Britain's priority is regional stability and a lasting end to conflict, welcoming the ceasefire and ongoing US–Iran talks. He also called for the full and unconditional reopening of the strait and rejected any fees on vessels transiting the waterway.

The UK said it will continue working with international partners to secure a durable settlement and protect global shipping routes. (QNA)
